Public executions and livestreamed killings are the sort of spectacle we associate with terrorist organisations and authoritarian regimes. Donald Trump has now abandoned plans to broadcast a military execution following widespread public condemnation. But the reversal raises an even more disturbing question: how did the United States come so close to turning state-sanctioned killing into a global spectacle in the first place?

There are moments in a country’s history when the mask slips. When the rhetoric about freedom, civilisation and democratic values collides so violently with the behaviour of those in power that the hypocrisy becomes impossible to ignore.

America has just experienced one of those moments.

The Trump administration announced plans to execute a prisoner by firing squad and livestream his death to the public.

Then came the backlash.

Politicians, religious leaders, military figures, human rights advocates and ordinary Americans condemned the proposal. Opposition crossed traditional political divisions, exposing widespread discomfort with the idea of transforming a military execution into a public broadcast.

And on 15 October 2026, Donald Trump backed down.

The president announced that the planned execution of Nidal Malik Hasan would proceed, but the livestream proposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth would not.

The decision is welcome.

But it should not be mistaken for a demonstration of moral leadership.

It is an extraordinary indictment of the administration’s judgment that such an intervention became necessary at all.

The United States of America - the country that calls itself the leader of the free world - had to be persuaded not to broadcast the killing of a prisoner to a worldwide audience.

That is not a reassuring reflection of the moral instincts of those in power.

It is a warning about how far those instincts have drifted.

Public Outrage Forced a Presidential Retreat

The man at the centre of the controversy is Nidal Malik Hasan, the former US Army psychiatrist convicted of murdering 13 people and wounding 32 others at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009.

His crimes were appalling. The victims, survivors and their families deserve justice, remembrance and respect.

Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on 3 December 2026, although legal proceedings could still affect that timetable.

But the controversy was never simply about whether his death sentence should be carried out.

It was about the administration’s extraordinary proposal to make that death available for public consumption.

Hegseth supported livestreaming the execution, presenting the spectacle as a demonstration of American resolve and the consequences of terrorism.

What followed was a remarkable wave of opposition.

Criticism came from Democrats and Republicans, religious leaders, military veterans and people who otherwise support capital punishment.

A Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll found that approximately 80 per cent of Americans opposed livestreaming the execution, even though a narrow majority supported carrying out Hasan’s death sentence by firing squad.

That distinction is enormously important.

The American public was not simply rejecting punishment. Many were rejecting the transformation of punishment into entertainment.

Even within Trump’s own political movement, the proposal provoked discomfort.

Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that they did not intend to watch the execution. Religious leaders questioned the morality of the proposed broadcast, while critics warned that the footage could be exploited by extremists.

Eventually, the political pressure became impossible to ignore.

Trump announced that the execution would not be streamed.

Yet his explanation was revealing.

The president maintained that broadcasting the killing might have served as a powerful deterrent, while acknowledging that many decent, well-meaning people did not want to witness Hasan’s death.

In other words, Trump did not clearly reject the underlying premise that broadcasting a human being’s execution could be a legitimate demonstration of state power.

He accepted that public opposition made the spectacle unacceptable.

There is a significant difference between those two positions.

One reflects a moral boundary.

The other reflects a political calculation.

When the State Borrows the Terrorist’s Playbook

Terrorist organisations have long understood the propaganda value of filmed executions.

The camera becomes part of the weapon. Violence becomes theatre. Death becomes a message designed to intimidate, humiliate and demonstrate power.

That is precisely why the proposed American livestream was so disturbing.

There is an obvious legal and institutional distinction between a judicially authorised execution and a murder carried out by an extremist organisation.

But that distinction does not eliminate the moral danger of adopting similar methods of public display.

When a democratic government begins considering the visual language of the very extremists it claims to oppose, something has gone profoundly wrong.

Hegseth’s proposal threatened to turn an act of state punishment into a deliberately staged demonstration of power.

And Trump’s initial willingness to entertain that proposal raised questions about whether the administration understood the difference between administering justice and performing violence for an audience.

Supporters suggested that broadcasting the execution could deter future terrorism.

But there is no established evidence that livestreaming an execution would prevent terrorist attacks.

There are, however, serious reasons to fear the opposite consequences.

Such footage could be copied, manipulated and circulated by extremist propagandists. It could be used to recruit followers, encourage retaliation or portray the United States as a state driven by vengeance rather than justice.

An execution intended to demonstrate American strength could instead become a propaganda gift to America’s enemies.

The cancellation has prevented that particular danger from materialising.

But it does not erase the judgment that brought the country to the brink of it.

Trump, Hegseth and the Politics of Spectacle

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this controversy is that Trump ultimately had to overrule his own Defense Secretary.

Hegseth had championed the idea of making Hasan’s execution publicly viewable.

Trump’s intervention amounted to a significant public reversal of that plan.

Yet the president’s language suggests that he continued to see potential value in the spectacle itself.

That matters because it reveals something troubling about the political culture surrounding this administration.

Trump has long cultivated a leadership style built around confrontation, dramatic displays of authority and the presentation of power as a personal attribute.

His supporters frequently interpret this as decisiveness.

His critics see an approach to government in which institutions risk becoming instruments of political theatre.

The proposed livestream represented an especially extreme expression of that tendency.

A military execution is among the gravest acts a government can carry out.

It should never become an opportunity for political branding, public intimidation or a demonstration of presidential toughness.

Yet that is the territory into which this administration appeared willing to venture.

The fact that Trump eventually cancelled the broadcast does not answer why Hegseth believed such a proposal was appropriate in the first place.

Nor does it explain why the administration initially allowed the idea to progress so far.

A president’s responsibility is not merely to calculate whether an action will provoke sufficient public outrage to become politically inconvenient.

It is to establish moral and constitutional boundaries before those boundaries are crossed.

That responsibility appears to have been seriously tested here.

The Neo-Fascism Question Has Not Disappeared

Critics of the Trump administration have increasingly used the term neo-fascist to describe aspects of its political character.

It is a serious accusation, and one that deserves careful examination rather than casual name-calling.

Historically, fascist movements have been associated with extreme nationalism, authoritarian leadership, the glorification of force, contempt for pluralism and the subordination of individual rights to the mythology and power of the state.

Not every harsh government policy is fascist.

Nor does one disturbing proposal establish that an entire administration meets a particular historical definition.

But when political leaders contemplate turning state violence into a mass demonstration of national authority, comparisons with authoritarian political traditions become difficult to dismiss.

The proposed livestream was not merely about carrying out a criminal sentence.

Its advocates wanted people to watch.

They wanted the images of state power to be seen.

They wanted the execution to communicate a message beyond the punishment itself.

That is precisely where legitimate questions arise about the relationship between authoritarian political instincts and democratic government.

Trump’s cancellation does not automatically settle those questions.

Indeed, it sharpens one of them.

Would the administration have abandoned the proposal without widespread public resistance?

We cannot know with certainty.

But the sequence of events suggests that political and public pressure played a decisive role in the reversal.

That should concern anyone who believes the limits of government power ought to rest on principle rather than opinion polls.

A democracy should not need an overwhelming public backlash to remind its leaders that executions are not television events.

Eight in Ten Americans Drew a Line

There is, however, something genuinely encouraging about the public response.

At a time when American politics is often described as hopelessly polarised, the proposed livestream generated opposition across ideological boundaries.

Approximately eight in ten Americans rejected the idea.

That included many people who supported Hasan’s execution.

The significance of that distinction should not be underestimated.

It demonstrates that Americans can disagree profoundly about capital punishment while still recognising that certain forms of state conduct are degrading and unnecessary.

It also challenges the assumption that public displays of cruelty automatically appeal to voters who favour strong punishment.

Many Americans evidently believe that justice should be firm without becoming theatrical.

That is an important democratic instinct.

And on this occasion, it appears to have prevailed.

The administration’s reversal is therefore not simply a story about presidential decision-making.

It is a story about the ability of public opposition to impose limits on those exercising extraordinary power.

Religious leaders spoke out.

Political opponents challenged the proposal.

Members of the president’s own party expressed discomfort.

Military figures questioned its appropriateness.

Ordinary citizens rejected the spectacle.

And the government changed course.

That is how democratic accountability is supposed to function.

But it should not require a national mobilisation every time a government considers crossing an obvious moral boundary.

Justice Is Not a Reality Television Format

One of the most disturbing features of the proposed livestream was its apparent confusion between transparency and spectacle.

Supporters argued that the public should see the consequences of terrorism and that visible punishment could demonstrate accountability.

Those arguments deserve consideration.

But transparency in a democratic justice system means public laws, accountable procedures, independent courts, accessible records and scrutiny of government conduct.

It does not require broadcasting the final moments of a person’s life.

The government can explain its actions without inviting millions of spectators to watch an execution.

It can honour victims without turning their killer into the centre of a global media event.

It can condemn terrorism without reproducing the visual methods that extremist organisations have used to spread fear.

And it can demonstrate resolve without treating violence as a performance.

The proposed broadcast risked directing international attention away from the 13 people murdered at Fort Hood and towards the man responsible for their deaths.

That would have been a profound injustice to their memory.

It is also worth remembering that victims and survivors do not all share the same views about punishment or public displays of retribution.

Their suffering should not be used as a blanket justification for whatever spectacle political leaders wish to stage.

The families deserve respect.

They do not deserve to become supporting characters in a government-produced demonstration of lethal force.

The World Was Watching - And America Blinked

For generations, American leaders have presented their country as an alternative to authoritarianism.

That claim has always been contested, sometimes with very good reason.

American history contains slavery, segregation, racial terror, political repression and numerous failures to live up to the ideals expressed in its founding documents.

But the existence of those failures makes the responsibility to uphold democratic principles more important, not less.

Governments in countries such as Iran and Afghanistan have faced international condemnation for public executions.

The United States cannot credibly denounce the spectacle of state killing abroad while proposing to broadcast its own executions at home without inviting accusations of hypocrisy.

That contradiction was not lost on international observers.

The proposed livestream attracted condemnation beyond America’s borders, threatening to damage the country’s reputation and hand authoritarian governments an opportunity to accuse Washington of double standards.

Trump’s decision has prevented the execution from becoming the global broadcast originally envisaged.

But the reputational damage caused by the proposal itself cannot simply be wished away.

The world has seen that a senior American official considered such a spectacle appropriate.

It has seen that the president was willing to discuss its supposed deterrent value.

And it has seen that widespread public outrage was followed by a reversal.

That is hardly the image of confident democratic leadership.

It is the image of a government testing a dangerous boundary and retreating when the consequences became politically uncomfortable.

A Retreat Is Not the Same as a Moral Reckoning

The temptation now will be to treat the controversy as resolved.

The livestream has been cancelled.

The public has been heard.

The administration has changed course.

But important questions remain unanswered.

Why did the Defense Secretary believe a public execution broadcast was an appropriate use of military authority?

What legal and ethical advice was sought before the proposal was announced?

What consideration was given to the consequences for victims’ families, military personnel and the country’s international reputation?

And what safeguards exist to prevent future administrations from attempting something similar?

Those questions matter because democratic institutions cannot depend entirely on the personal restraint of individual officeholders.

They require clear rules, accountability and a political culture that understands the difference between legitimate authority and the theatrical exercise of power.

The cancellation should therefore be welcomed without allowing it to become an excuse for avoiding scrutiny.

Hegseth’s judgment deserves examination.

Trump’s initial response deserves examination.

And the wider political instincts that made the proposal imaginable deserve examination.

The president has prevented the broadcast.

He has not necessarily resolved the deeper problem it exposed.

The Real Victory Belongs to Democratic Resistance

There is a lesson in this controversy that extends far beyond Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth or Nidal Malik Hasan.

Democratic societies do not preserve their principles simply because their leaders promise to respect them.

They preserve those principles because citizens, institutions and public figures are prepared to challenge abuses of power.

This time, that resistance appears to have worked.

People who disagreed about the death penalty found common ground in rejecting the spectacle of a livestreamed execution.

Political divisions did not prevent a broad public objection.

And the administration ultimately retreated.

That is worth recognising.

But it should also be a reminder of how fragile democratic standards can become when leaders are tempted to confuse cruelty with strength.

The United States came dangerously close to normalising the public broadcast of a state execution.

The fact that the broadcast was cancelled does not make the original proposal less disturbing.

It makes the public response more significant.

America’s democratic institutions have survived enormous pressures, but their survival has never depended on the assumption that those in power will always exercise good judgment.

They depend on scrutiny, opposition, constitutional limits and a public willing to question the conduct of its government.

This controversy has demonstrated both the danger of abandoning those principles and the importance of defending them.

America Should Never Have Needed This Warning

The Trump administration’s decision to cancel the livestream is the right outcome.

But it is not a triumph of presidential wisdom.

It is a retreat from a proposal that should never have been advanced.

The execution itself remains scheduled. The wider debate about capital punishment continues. And the questions about the administration’s approach to power, punishment and political spectacle remain unresolved.

The strongest argument against broadcasting Hasan’s death has never required sympathy for Hasan.

It requires recognising that the standards governing state conduct should not depend on whether the condemned person is sympathetic.

Human dignity is not a reward for good behaviour.

It is a principle that places limits on what governments should do, even to people convicted of terrible crimes.

Those limits are especially important when public anger is greatest.

A democracy does not prove its strength by making death available to watch on demand.

It proves its strength by maintaining its principles when abandoning them would be easiest.

Donald Trump has now cancelled the proposed broadcast.

That is welcome.

But the fact that Americans had to unite in such overwhelming numbers to prevent their government from turning an execution into a public spectacle should trouble anyone who cares about the country’s democratic future.

The lesson is not that America has suddenly rediscovered its moral compass because its president changed his mind.

The lesson is that millions of Americans demonstrated a stronger instinct for restraint than the officials who proposed the spectacle.

And perhaps that is the most important distinction of all.

The administration was prepared to put death on display.

The American public said no.

And this time, the public prevailed.

A country that still wishes to claim moral leadership should not merely celebrate that outcome.

It should ask why such resistance was necessary in the first place.
